Antigo
Which Generation are you?
BEGIN IN IRELAND:
THE FIRST GENERATION
IN AMERICA:
From Ireland to Worcester, Massachusetts to Black Creek, Wisconsin
Michael Cleary and Mae Powers
Michael Cleary came from Waterford in 1846 and settled for a time at Worcester, MA. He met
Mae Powers at Worcester. She probably left County Cork when she was 11. Life for the Irish
in Massachusetts at that time was not easy. Two of Mae's uncles may have been killed in
the Worcester area. Mae and Michael left Worchester for Wisconsin. They settled on a farm
at Black Creek near Appleton. Michael probably went to work at the Chicago and
Northwestern Railroad. Some of the seven children were born in Worchester. Edward, the
person who established the family in Antigo, was born about 1856. The move to Antigo came
when the Chicago Northwestern opened a new line from Antigo to Ashland, on Lake Superior.
The pioneering family of the Delagliese built Antigo's first house, a log cabin, now
rebuilt as an historical site on Suprior Street in Antigo. The Clearys are related to the
Delagliese through the Morrisseys. (The gravesites of the two prioneering families adjoin
one
another.)
THE SECOND GENERATION:
From Appleton area to settling in Antigo
THE CHILDREN OF MICHAEL CLEARY: Edward-Morris-Michael-Ellen(Nell)-Catherine-Mary-Margaret
(Sr. Aloysius, CSA) - disperse from the farm near Appleton.
EDWARD CLEARY-MARGARET MORRISSEY
Edward married Margaret Morrissey. They moved to Antigo, WI, about 1880. It was believed
they were the second family to settle in Antigo.

THE
THIRD GENERATION (about 1883-1978)
Five brothers and two sisters raised in Antigo. Five move to Milwaukee or Chicago in the
1920s.
THE FOURTH GENERATION
(1918-present)
Thirteen cousins: Margaret Cody Stott; Virgina Cody Payant (+1980); Kathleen Cody
(Sesil) Payant; James Edward Cody; Robert Edward Cleary; Phillip Eugene Cleary (+1985);
Marjorie Cleary Rusinko (+); Vincent Walter Cleary, Sr., Edward Louis Cleary; Jeanne Hall
Dorschel; Constance Hall (+); Lawrence Henry Hall; and Mary Cleary Kenny.
Born and raised in Wisconsin or Illinois. Nine living cousins, now grandparents and
great-grandparents are living in Antigo and Green Bay, WI; Beaverton, OR; Santa Rosa and
Calistoga, CA; FL; Providence, RI; Mystic, CT; and one unknown location.

Lawrence H. Hall
Larry Hall holds several graduate degrees including a Ph.D. in History from New
York University. He taught in the Department of Foreign Languages (Portuguese and
Brazilian studies) at the United States Military Academy for five years and, after
retirement at West Point, was on the faculty at Connecticut College for several years.
Earlier he lived for two years in Brazil, visiting almost all of its regions. He returned
repeatedly, especially to the Amazon region. He now spends his winters working on a
biography of a 19th century New London sea captain and lecturing, especially on South
America and the Caribbean on cruise ships.
Before retiring, Larry served as a Politico-Mi1itary analyst on the Army Genera1 Staff
and also worked with the State Department on several projects. He and his wife Mary, who
was working in Germany, met and married in the 1ate 1955. Since then they have lived and
traveled extensive1y in Europe, South America the United States, and Canada. Professor
Hall has lectured on nearly sixty cruises and Mary, who shares his love for travel and the
sea, has accompanied him.
The Halls live in the Historic District of Mystic, Connecticut, where they restored a
house built in 1840. Both enjoy sailing, lobstering, and the quality of life in that small
New England seaport town. They are active members of the Mystic Seaport Museum where Mary
serves as a volunteer and Larry participates in the annua1 Maritime History Symposium.
Larrys professional affiliations include the American Historica1 Association, the
New England Conference on Latin American Studies, and several other academic groups. He is
also a member of the Advisory Council of the Center for Defense Information in Washington,
D.C.
THE FIFTH
GENERATION (1949-present)
The oldest, John Cleary, turned 50 in 1998. Others crossed the forties threshold. Is the
youngest already 30?
THE SIXTH GENERATION
(about 1975-present)
Is the oldest Patrick McKenna (1975)? Youngest are new babies born in 1998 in Wisconsin.
Does any of this generation have children?
IS
THERE A
