BEGIN IN IRELAND:

THE FIRST GENERATION IN AMERICA:

From Ireland to Worcester, Massachusetts to Black Creek, Wisconsin

Michael Cleary and Mae Powers

Michael Cleary came from Waterford in 1846 and settled for a time at Worcester, MA. He met Mae Powers at Worcester. She probably left County Cork when she was 11. Life for the Irish in Massachusetts at that time was not easy. Two of Mae's uncles may have been killed in the Worcester area. Mae and Michael left Worchester for Wisconsin. They settled on a farm at Black Creek near Appleton. Michael probably went to work at the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. Some of the seven children were born in Worchester. Edward, the person who established the family in Antigo, was born about 1856. The move to Antigo came when the Chicago Northwestern opened a new line from Antigo to Ashland, on Lake Superior. The pioneering family of the Delagliese built Antigo's first house, a log cabin, now rebuilt as an historical site on Suprior Street in Antigo. The Clearys are related to the Delagliese through the Morrisseys. (The gravesites of the two prioneering families adjoin one
another.)

THE SECOND GENERATION:

From Appleton area to settling in Antigo

THE CHILDREN OF MICHAEL CLEARY: Edward-Morris-Michael-Ellen(Nell)-Catherine-Mary-Margaret (Sr. Aloysius, CSA) - disperse from the farm near Appleton.

EDWARD CLEARY-MARGARET MORRISSEY

Edward married Margaret Morrissey. They moved to Antigo, WI, about 1880. It was believed they were the second family to settle in Antigo.

THE THIRD GENERATION (about 1883-1978)

Five brothers and two sisters raised in Antigo. Five move to Milwaukee or Chicago in the 1920s.
